Chief scientist to revitalise government advice network

The government’s chief scientist is reviewing Whitehall’s network of scientific advisers amid concern in some quarters about departments going without advisers and appointing civil servants with little formal research experience.

Patrick Vallance (pictured), who took up the role of government chief scientific adviser in April, said he wanted each department to appoint a dedicated scientific adviser and to sign up to the UK’s academic concordat on research integrity.
