The Ministry of Defence has appointed an Oxford-based mathematical biologist as its first ever female chief scientific adviser.
Angela McLean is currently co-director of the Institute for Emerging Infections at the University of Oxford, as well as a senior research fellow in theoretical life sciences at All Souls College. As CSA for the MoD, she will advise ministers on matters related to science and technology.
The government currently has 18 men serving as permanent CSAs at various departments, and only four women in such roles, not including McLean.
