Science minister Chris Skidmore has cited the latest round of Future Leadership Fellows as proof that the UK’s research base is “truly global”.
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy announced on 20 September that it was investing £78 million in 78 early career researchers through the scheme, which offers seven years’ worth of funding.
They include Joe Rainger at the University of Edinburgh, who will work with DNA, live cell-imaging and developing eye tissue to provide insights into birth defects such as cleft palate and spina bifida. While Izzy Jayasinghe aims to use her fellowship to build portable, cheap and easy-to-use imaging technology at the University of Leeds.
