Government science advisers in ‘emergency’ mode over virus

Patrick Vallance says science advice is taking a central role in government’s response to coronavirus

The government’s chief science advisor, Patrick Vallance, is treating the increasingly global outbreak of coronavirus as an “emergency”, as Public Health England confirmed that 14 people in the UK have been tested for the virus.

Some 570 people in China have been confirmed to have the virus, and 12 people in other countries so far. More than 20 people in China who contracted the virus have died.
