Senior figures call for R&D investments as budget day arrives

Chancellor Rishi Sunak faces calls to pay full costs of research and fulfil government promises

Senior figures have made calls on how the government should spend extra funds on R&D in its first budget since taking office, after it pledged to double R&D funding in the next five years.

Meeting a target to spend 2.4 per cent of GDP in the sector by 2027 “will be one of the defining tests of this government’s seriousness in meeting its ambitions” Conservative MP and former business secretary Greg Clark told Research Professional News ahead of the 11 March budget.
