Kwasi Kwarteng says actions were “entirely reasonable” following criticism for vetoing appointment of Jonathan Michie

Business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has defended his intervention in the appointment of an executive chair for the Economic and Social Research Council, describing it as “entirely reasonable.”

Kwarteng sparked concern among the academic community in February following reports that he had vetoed the selection of Jonathan Michie as leader of UK Research and Innovation council because, according to the Financial Times, he was “supposedly too left wing”.
