MPs launch semiconductor inquiry amid chip shortage

Security concerns grow over shortfall, as UK’s largest microchip factory is subject to foreign takeover

A new inquiry examining the strengths and weaknesses of the UK’s semiconductor industry and its supply chain has been launched by MPs on the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee.

The inquiry comes amid an ongoing global shortage of semiconductors—which are used in computer chips—that has caused widespread disruption to supply chains. This has affected the production of products such as cars and computer games.
