Donelan’s appointment as education secretary could put universities at heart of Department for Education policy

The unprecedented promotion of a higher and further education minister to the role of education secretary could result in a renewed focus on university policy at the Department for Education, commentators have suggested.

Michelle Donelan, who had been the minister responsible for universities since 2020, was promoted to education secretary on 5 July after the previous secretary of state, Nadhim Zahawi, was made chancellor.
