Newcastle head to lead REF environment pilot

Chris Day, vice-chancellor and president of Newcastle University, is to chair the environment pilot panel for the next iteration of the Research Excellence Framework.

The panel will pilot a new approach to assessing research environments—or settings in which research is conducted—at higher education institutions. This will include information about institutions’ research strategy, people, infrastructure and funding.

“Building on my experience of chairing the Clinical Medicine panel for the last REF, I welcome the opportunity to assess the impact of institutional-level environment information with its potential to ease the burden of returns for HEIs,” Day said in a statement on 15 October.
