The university funder Research England is considering carrying out a real-time evaluation of the next Research Excellence Framework to assess the effects of the changes introduced after the Stern review.
On 11 April, Research England announced that it would launch a pilot study this spring to test the feasibility of a real-time review of the changes introduced in REF 2021. The changes are based on the former British Academy president Nicholas Stern’s recommendations in 2016.
As part of the six-month pilot, academics from Cardiff University and the University of Sheffield will carry out surveys at their own institutions and at the University of Sussex and Nottingham Trent University to determine the feasibility of a longitudinal, real-time review of the framework.
