MRC backs chronic fatigue syndrome research

The Medical Research Council is funding five projects worth more than £1.6 million to investigate the causes and treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome or myalgic encephalomyelitis.

CFS/ME affects an estimated 250,000 people of all ages in the UK, causing symptoms including profound physical and mental fatigue, muscle and joint pain, disturbed sleep patterns and concentration and memory problems. The combination and severity of symptoms varies from patient to patient, making it a difficult condition to diagnose and treat.
