Arctic fresh water dome could cool Europe, finds study

UK researchers have found a huge pool of fresh water in the western Arctic Ocean that could one day come to cool temperatures in Europe.

The Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling at University College London and the National Oceanography Centre argue the pool could be a result of strong Arctic winds that cause the sea surface to bulge upwards. If the wind changes direction, it adds, the water could potentially spill out into the north Atlantic and cool Europe by slowing down an ocean current that is currently keeping its climate relatively mild.
