The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council has teamed up with the US National Science Foundation to launch a $12 million (£7.7m) ‘ideas lab’ to investigate ways to reduce reliance on nitrogen fertilisers for farming.
The initiative will generate research proposals to explore ways to enable plants to use the abundant supply of nitrogen in the earth’s atmosphere and thereby reducing the reliance on nitrogen fertilisers.
