NERC joins US agencies on transatlantic research

The UK's Natural Environment Research Council is co-funding a £44-million scheme of research into ocean currents alongside two major American agencies—the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The scheme comprises two projects, one to record ocean temperature, salinity and current strength in the north Atlantic, and another to continue supporting the array of moored instruments between the Canary Islands and Florida.

The first project will be led by Sheldon Bacon from the National Oceanography Centre, which is based at the University of Southampton, and the second by Meric Srokosz, also of NOC.
