Several of the Natural Environment Research Council’s research centres have warned that important national capabilities could be lost if the institutes are moved out of the public sector.
John Ludden, executive director of the British Geological Survey, told Research Fortnight that becoming completely commercial as a result of NERC’s ongoing review of centre ownership and governance would be wrong, even though the BGS is already the most commercial of the centres.
“What I don’t want the BGS to become is a consulting company,” says Ludden. He suggests that the survey would likely look towards universities rather than going fully commercial.
