UK research councils strike deal on Swiss collaborations

UK research projects in the social sciences and humanities can now include co-investigators from Switzerland, under a deal struck between the two countries.

The agreement between the Economic and Social Research Council and the Arts and Humanities Research Council in the UK and the Swiss National Science Foundation, signed on 8 November, means that up to 30 per cent of research grant costs can be allocated to overseas collaborators. Grant proposals need only to be filed with one funder.

Paul Boyle, chief executive of the ESRC, said in a statement that research increasingly required cross-border collaboration. “Opening up national project funding to international co-investigators is a simple and effective way of encouraging such collaboration and I am therefore pleased to sign this joint statement, which I hope this will be the first of several with other sister agencies internationally,” he said.
