EPSRC knowledge transfer funds earned their keep

The £55 million of knowledge transfer funding provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in 2009 generated £127m of additional public and industry funding, according to a report.

In addition to the £127m, the recipient universities added £21m of their own money, the report says. Furthermore, the institutions collaborated with about 700 partners, were granted 56 patents, and founded 30 spinout companies.

These figures represent the outcomes from 19 of the 25 knowledge transfer grants provided by the EPSRC—those that responded to the authors of the report. Non-economic outcomes included a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 2,000 tonnes a year.
