MRC grant success rate falls

The UK Medical Research Council's average success rate for winning grants has fallen from 26 per cent in 2013-14 to 22 per cent in 2014-15.

In its annual report, the MRC said that the 4 percentage point decrease was due to a large increase in applications—particularly to the council’s Skills Development Fellowships.

A total of 183 research grants were awarded in 2014-15, worth £129.3 million. The STFC’s total expenditure on research grants was £305.1m—up from £272.5m in 2013-14. While the council’s net expenditure was £705.9m, an increase of £5m from 2013-14.
