The Natural Environment Research Council has revealed the three programme areas where it may spend its next tranche of strategic research funding.
In a statement issued on 11 February, the council identified three areas for strategic research funding: fundamental ecological research for sustainable resource exploitation in the deep ocean; the role of the Southern Ocean in the Earth system; and processes associated with UK unconventional hydrocarbon extraction.
Strategic programmes should address large-scale problems involving complex research with significant opportunities for partnership. These projects could receive up to £20 million in funding over six years.
