STFC struggles to win challenges funding

The Science and Technology Facilities Council is having a tough time winning funding from the £1.5-billion Global Challenges Research Fund and the £4.7bn Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF), according to minutes from a meeting of the STFC governing body published last month.

During the meeting, held in March, STFC management raised concerns that the physical sciences had difficulty in securing funding from the two interdisciplinary programmes. At that time, the STFC had submitted 11 proposals to the GCRF but none were successful.

A proposal submitted by the Diamond Light Source reached the interview stage but ultimately failed to get funding. STFC chief executive Brian Bowser is quoted as saying that the process for looking at the proposals was fair, but that physical sciences disciplines struggled to diversify the pool of applicants.
