The Economic and Social Research Council is to fund its Cohort and Longitudinal Studies Enhancement Resources (Closer) programme for a further two years.
Closer, an initiative that brings together eight longitudinal studies, the British Library and the UK Data Service, was awarded a core grant of about £5 million for 2012-15 from the ESRC and the Medical Research Council. According to an announcement on 11 August, the programme has been allocated a further £2m to support its activities until September 2019.
Alison Park, director of Closer, said that the extension would fund cross-cohort analysis and data discoverability via Closer Discovery, a search engine that enables researchers to search and browse questionnaires and data from eight UK longitudinal studies. The extra funding will also enable the continuation of the Closer training programme, which supports the next generation of researchers.
