NERC discards two topics for large-scale funding

The Natural Environment Research Council has decided against offering £20 million for programmes on improving the resilience of UK peatland and designing future landscapes.

The two topics, which emerged from a call for ideas that NERC opened in 2016 on how to address major environmental challenges, failed to gain approval from the council’s Science Board, NERC said in a statement on 8 August.

The Science Board considered the topics in July, after they had been selected to be developed further by scoping groups. NERC had announced in February that there could be up to £20m available over six years for projects in the two topic areas.
