Wingham to lead NERC under UKRI

Duncan Wingham, chief executive of the Natural Environment Research Council, is to continue managing the agency once it becomes part of UK Research and Innovation.

Wingham, who has been in post for nearly six years, will serve as the council’s first executive chairman from 1 April 2018—the expected launch date for UKRI—to December 2020, according to a statement issued by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) on 11 August.

Under UKRI, executive chairs will replace the councils’ chief executives, but they will stop being accounting officers. This responsibility will exclusively belong to UKRI chief executive designate Mark Walport.
