Jo Johnson, the universities and science minister, confirmed the appointment on 8 September in a statement.
Kenyon will oversee UKRI’s £6-billion annual portfolio of research funding. This figure is set to rise to £8bn by the end of 2020, as announced during the autumn statement in 2016.
