Big data pool makes a splash with social scientists

Researchers have applauded the creation of a platform that should smooth the way for them to access administrative data from government departments and public agencies.

The Administrative Data Research Partnership (ADRP) will enable researchers accredited to the UK Statistics Authority to access data from the 25 ministerial departments, three devolved administrations, and hundreds of other agencies, public bodies, and local authorities. This could include anonymised educational records, health information and financial data.

The Economic and Social Research Council announced on 27 September that it would supply £44 million to support the initiative until July 2021. The council hopes it will increase policy-relevant research in the areas of education, healthcare and crime prevention.
