The Hartree Centre, a high-performance-computing and data-analytics research facility, needs continued public funding to deliver economic impact, according to an evaluation of its first four years of existence.
The centre has the potential to make a real difference nationally, but it will not be able to finance its running costs exclusively through users’ fees, a report commissioned by the Science and Technology Facilities Council and produced by the consultancy group Technopolis has said.
The government has so far allocated more than £170 million to centre, established in 2013 at the Sci-Tech Daresbury Campus in Cheshire.
