Researchers want more say in Strategic Priorities Fund

UK Research and Innovation has come under fire from scientists who feel it failed to engage properly with them on the design of the Strategic Priorities Fund, one of the funder’s flagship schemes for interdisciplinary research.

The SPF was first announced in November 2017. The following May, some research councils asked a small number of senior scientists to make suggestions for broad themes. Researchers were given about a week to come up with ideas, according to emails seen by Research Fortnight.

On 19 October, UKRI announced the first four SPF programmes, which were all related to climate change. Funding calls for these programmes, worth £60 million in total, are due to be launched shortly.
