UKRI awards £48m to AI and data science programmes

UK Research and Innovation has routed £48 million to artificial intelligence and data science programmes in the latest allocations from its flagship Strategic Priorities Fund.

The funding will be used to develop ‘digital twins’—digital replicas of physical systems assisted by AI—to transform engineering, urban planning and healthcare.

The government has made AI and data one of the four Industrial Strategy Grand Challenges, and the Strategic Priorities Fund has emerged as one of umbrella funder UK Research and Innovation’s most important schemes for interdisciplinary research since it was announced in November 2017.
