UKRI awards £18m to construction R&D projects

The umbrella funding body UK Research and Innovation has awarded £18 million to projects that hope to transform the construction industry using digital technology, supported through its Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.

The funding, announced on 31 January, is part of the ISCF Transforming Construction Challenge. It includes £5m awarded to four projects through a new scheme called the Research Leaders programme, and £13.3m distributed among 24 collaborative R&D projects.

The proposals funded under the Research Leaders programme range from exploring the use of 3D-printed concrete components created off-site, to inventing new ways of organising teams of robots specialised in construction.
