Turing fellows named in £370m backing for grand challenges

   

Government announces funding package for research in artificial intelligence and bioscience

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has unveiled a £370-million package for scientific research, including the first tranche of Turing fellows, 16 doctoral training centres for artificial intelligence research, funding for postgraduate conversion courses in AI and additional PhD studentships in bioscience.

The first five AI Turing fellows are: Neil Lawrence of the University of Cambridge, Tim Dodwell of the University of Exeter, Yarin Gal of the University of Oxford, Maria Liakata of the University of Warwick and Anna Scaife from the University of Manchester. The fellows will join the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national centre for AI and data science, named after the famous researcher (pictured).
