MRC plows ahead with mouse genetics centre closure

Mammalian Genetics Unit to be replaced by a national network

The Medical Research Council has confirmed that it is closing its prestigious Mammalian Genetics Unit at the Harwell Institute in Oxfordshire.

The shutting of the internationally recognised centre—which conducts work on conditions including diabetes and neurodegeneration—was first raised in July by an expert panel. It drew immediate concern, with one group of researchers calling it a “major threat” to the important field of mouse genetics in the UK.
