The Medical Research Council has appointed neurologist Patrick Chinnery to the newly created role of clinical director.
Chinnery, who served as director of the Institute of Genetic Medicine at Newcastle University between 2010 and 2015, will be in charge of developing, promoting and implementing MRC research programmes with national and international partners.
Since 2015, Chinnery has led a research programme on mitochondrial genomics and human diseases at the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit at the University of Cambridge. He is a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, a senior investigator at the National Institute for Health Research, and a Wellcome Trust principal research fellow. Chinnery also serves as chair of the MRC neurosciences and mental health board.
