UK and US funders create soil research programme

UK Research and Innovation is joining two research funders in the United States to fund research on soil, in one of a series of bilateral collaborations between the two countries announced in recent months.

The Signals in the Soil programme, announced on 18 February, is a joint initiative between UKRI, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the US Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

The goal of the scheme is to develop sensors to collect data on the state of soil ecosystems that can be used in different environments. Research on soil is becoming increasingly important in global efforts to ensure the sustainability of future food production.
