ESRC creates first ‘legacy status’ research centres

The Economic and Social Research Council has awarded ‘legacy status’ to five of its former research centres, and will channel £100,000 to each of them as a result.

Legacy status is awarded by the council to centres that it funds, and allows them to maintain their ESRC centre branding and receive additional funding. The funder has been scaling back the support it offers to such centres in recent years, while introducing schemes to ease the drop-off of direct funding.

Legacy centre status was announced as a possibility for former centres in November 2018, and the decision on 28 June to create five of them followed the research council’s first legacy centre status review in April.
