Bullying probe sees MRC chief blocked from Wellcome grants

Biomedical funder imposes sanctions on Fiona Watt after learning results of whistleblower investigation

The head of the Medical Research Council has been blocked from applying to the biomedical research funder Wellcome for 12 months and is required to hand over management of her existing grants to colleagues.

Yesterday, Research Professional News revealed that MRC executive chair and stem cell scientist Fiona Watt had been at the centre of a whistleblowing investigation at UK Research and Innovation, triggered by a bullying complaint. The investigation, which took place in early 2021, culminated in Watt apologising for how she treated staff.
