Fears raised that ministerial oversight played into research agency chief executive not seeking second term

Research leaders have praised Ottoline Leyser’s leadership of UK Research and Innovation after the agency said she would not seek a second term of office as chief executive.

The news has also raised questions over the motivation behind Leyser’s decision to step down at the end of her current five-year term in June 2025, with some figures raising concerns about the level of direction exercised by ministers over UKRI.
