The Higher Education Funding Council for England has announced it has received 35,811 bids for the 20,000 'margin' places it is making available for institutions charging £7,500 or less in tuition fees.
The numbers show that further-education colleges are making most of the bids. Of a total of 202 bidding institutions, 34 are universities and 167 are further-education institutions.
