Craig Calhoun, a social scientist, has been appointed director of the London School of Economics and Political Science, it was announced on 24 November.
Calhoun, a US citizen and professor at New York University, will take up the post on 1 September 2012. He will succeed Howard Davies, who resigned in March this year after it emerged that he had authorised a £1.5 million charitable donation from Saif al-Islam, the son of the then Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi.
