Learned society warns against fees decision for Wales

The Learned Society of Wales has warned that the plan to allow universities to charge £9,000 tuition fees will lead to significant uncertainty and potential funding problems for the sector.

The society said the Welsh Assembly Government’s decision to award grants to cover the cost of higher fees for Welsh-domiciled students was originally based on the assumption that universities would charge around £7,000. Now that eight out of 10 had been given the green light to charge £9,000, the assembly government could be left with a £280 million annual bill to meet its subsidy promises.
