The Liberal Democrat-leaning think tank Centreforum has said it is pleased that the government has “heeded” its call to abandon penalties on early repayment of student debt.
According to reports in the Guardian and the BBC, the government is expected to announce the scrapping of plans to levy annual charges of about 5 per cent on early-loan repayments. The policy, suggested by the Lib Dems, is to stop better-off students from dodging interest charges.
