Fear of debt and the worries about the high cost of tuition fees are deterring young people entering higher education, a poll of 2,750 secondary-school-pupils has found.
More than one-third (36 per cent) of students polled from single-parent households say they are unlikely to enter higher education because “my family couldn’t afford for me to be a student”. The figure drops to 13 per cent for those in two-parent households.
