UCU survey uncovers low success rates for black and minority ethnic professorial candidates

Candidates from minority ethnic backgrounds applying for professorships have much lower success rates compared with applicants who are white, according to a University and College Union survey.

Using responses from 23 higher education institutions, the UCU found that there was a drop in the proportion of BME staff from application to appointment in professorial roles in all but one institution: the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.
