Top research performers attract most capital funding

The higher education institutions that are strongest in research attract more public and private capital funding for research, reinforcing their positions, a UK government report has confirmed.

The report, commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, sought to understand the effects of funding cuts associated with the UK Treasury’s 2010 spending review.

Following the spending review, funding available to all institutions for formula-based research capital across the four higher education funding councils in the UK nations dropped by an average of 58 per cent. According to the BIS report, this drop resulted in a higher than average 67 per cent decrease in formula-based research capital for the most research-intensive universities, between 2004 and 2010.
