The UK coalition government’s higher education reforms are a “continuation of a process of marketization that began with the Thatcher government”, according Roger Brown, the co-director for the Centre of Higher Education Research Development at Liverpool Hope University.
Writing on the Council for the Defence of British Universities website on 8 April, Brown says that while changes “may not have delivered a genuine economic market, they have certainly led to a good deal of market-like behaviour on the part of institutions, students and employers”.
