Manchester city appoints healthcare tsar

Manchester City Council has appointed a professor of rehabilitation science from the University of Manchester as its director of healthcare and innovation, a role created to ensure closer collaboration between healthcare research institutes and healthcare businesses.

Jackie Oldham is also director of the MIMIT (Manchester: Integrating Medicine and Innovative Technology) centre, which works with the University of Manchester and local NHS trusts to foster collaboration between clinicians, scientists, engineers and industry.

Part of her new role will involve helping to create a ’super cluster’ of global companies, small businesses and start-ups to work with universities and NHS facilities. A spokesman for the University of Manchester told Research Fortnight that in this respect Oldham would be building on her experience as director of MIMIT, although the plans did not represent a direct expansion of the centre.
