Johnson confirms creation of teaching assessment exercise

The UK's universities and science minister Jo Johnson has confirmed that the Conservative government will establish a Teaching Excellence Framework.

Speaking at a meeting with vice-chancellors’ group Universities UK on 1 July, Johnson said the framework would create incentives for universities to "devote as much attention to the quality of teaching as fee-paying students and prospective employers have a right to expect”. Although he added, “Some rebalancing of the pull between teaching and research is undoubtedly required.”

The teaching assessment exercise was promised in the Conservative Party manifesto, and will be designed with the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Quality Assurance Agency and consultation from university groups.
