Universities UK has established a working group to examine the role of higher-education-related agencies.

The review will consider the function, services and infrastructure of organisations such as the Equality Challenge Unit, the Higher Education Academy, the Higher Education Statistics Agency and the Quality Assurance Agency.

The group said in a statement on 11 February that five years of major changes to the funding of higher education and a recent increase in the number of new providers entering the market had “enhanced competitive forces in the sector and the need for institutions to be adaptive and responsive”. It added that sector agencies continued to play "a critical role in the sector”, but that they needed to adapt to the “challenging new environment”.
