Universities want independent review of tuition fees

MillionPlus, the association of post-1992 universities, has called for a review of tuition fees and university funding to be carried out by experts from outside government.

Following prime minister Theresa May’s pledge to freeze university tuition fees at £9,250 a year during the Conservative Party’s annual conference, MillionPlus has condemned the “disappointing” promise, that leaves poorer students struggling to reach the end of their university course.

In a statement published on 1 October, MillionPlus said more should be done to support students facing financial hardship, such as the re-introduction of the maintenance grants that were cut in 2016.
