Any future immigration system must support UK universities in attracting and retaining researchers, academics and technical experts from anywhere in the world, the Russell Group has said.
In a statement on 7 June, the Russell Group of 24 research-intensive universities proposed a separate light-touch immigration route for academic, research and specialist technical positions. This system would prioritise PhD-holders coming to the UK to fill highly skilled positions.
The group said the government should acknowledge that earnings thresholds alone “are not fit for purpose as a proxy for the level of skill and specialisation necessary to undertake research and teaching roles in universities”.
