Severance pay should be published, says HEFCE

Confidentiality clauses should be the exception, not the norm, the Higher Education Funding Council for England has advised.

Greater transparency is needed on severance payments to senior staff, and on the salaries of university vice-chancellors and staff earning over £100,000, HEFCE said in a guidance document published on 15 June.

Madeleine Atkins, HEFCE’s chief executive, said there was “significant student and public interest” in the remuneration of university leaders and in severance payments and packages.
